Khmelnytsk Region is an oblast (province) in western Ukraine. It was created on September 22, 1937 as Kamianets-Podil'ska oblast’. In 1954 it was renamed the Khmel’nyts’ka oblast’ as the capital was moved from Kamianets-Podilskyi to Kmelnytskyi. The area of the oblast is 20,600 km² (3.4% of total area of Ukraine), its population (as of 2004) is 1,401,140 inhabitants. The territory of the oblast is located between 48°27' and 50°37' north latitude and between 26°09' and 27°56' east longitude. Length from the north to the south is 220 km, and from the west to the east is 120 km. The oblast borders on Rivne Oblast in the northwest, on Zhytomyr Oblast in the northeast, on Vinnytsia Oblast in the east, on Chernivtsi Oblast in the south, and on Ternopil Oblast in the west.

The most central part of the oblast is Podillya highland (270—370 m). The northwest part is Volyn highland (highest point — 329 m), the north part of the oblast is Polissya (200—250 m). The southwest part is crossed by Tovtry range The highest point of oblast — mount Velyka Buhaikha , 409 m — located in this range. The extreme south of the oblast has a range-like surface with the canyon-likes river's valleys. The level of the Dnister Reservoir (121 m) is the lowest point of the oblast.
There are 120 rivers with the length more than 10 km in the region. The largest of them are Dniester (length in oblast — 160 km) with inflows Smotrych, Ushytsya, Zbruch; Soutern Buh (length in oblast — 120 km) with inflows Buzhok, Ikva, Vovk; rivers of Dnieper's basin: Horyn, Khomora, Sluch. The lakes located mostly in basin of Horyn. The largest reservoir is the Dniester Reservoir.

There are 1858 pond and reservoirs in the oblast, the largest of them are: Shchedrivs'ke (12.58 km²), Novostavs'ke (11.68 km²), Kuz'myns'ke (7.65 km²)
Economy of the oblast mostly deals with energy industry, transport and agriculture. The oblast is a historical crossroad of the railway and highway routes connecting Central Europe to Black Sea coast and Russia (with city of Shepetivka being the most important railway junction). "Khmelnyts'ka" nuclear power plant in the city of Netishyn is the most important industrial company of the oblast. Notable machinery, armament and chemical industries are also present.
